Windows media play is missing from AutoPlay

After upgrading from XP Home to Vista Home Premium, the machine is missing
all of the choices in AutoPlay that deal with aspects of Windows Media Player.

Gone are:
Play audio CD using Windows Media Player
Rip music from CD using Windows Media Player

So far we have tried:
sfc/scannow which report no integrity problems
download / reinstall WMP which will not install an older version over the
installed version

Also, Windows Media Player icons did not automatically setup after the
install, so I went into the directory and ran the setup_wm.exe file

How can I get the Window Media Player functionality back?

The CD player is there, can be seen, and indeed works. It is the AutoRun
menu that has no Microsoft Media Player listings.

Hi,

I only asked because those options would be missing if the system didn't see
an optical drive installed. Have you gone into the autoplay options in the
control panel and checked setting there yet?

Download wmp_handlers_vista.reg from this link:
http://www.winhelponline.com/fixes/w...lers_vista.reg

Save the file to Desktop. Right-click on the file and choose "Merge". Answer the prompts.

See if the WMP entries are restored in the AutoPlay dialog.

Perfect, that set of registry entries was exactly what was missing, and now
the settings are there and Media Player works as on other Vista machines.

Any thoughts on what might have happened to miss the registry entries during
the XP Home to Vista Home Premium upgrade?
