Windows Media Player 10 Doesn't Work After Installing KB911565 Pat

After installing the KB911565 patch, Windows Media Player 10 gives me this
message: "The file wmp.dll has a version number of 10.0.0.3990 where
10.0.0.3802 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and
must be reinstalled."

Well, it worked fine just before installing the patch. After reinstalling,
WMP10 works, but going back to Windows Update, the KB911565 patch is listed
as needing to be installed. Installing the patch again gives me the same
error.

Works the problem?

In Finland mediaplayer works after the patches. I had to install the
KB913446 manually aswell though. Wonder what was/is wrong with the KB913446 ?
Any ideas ?

Do you have wmp.dll in c:\program files\windows media player? If so, you
should remove it and only use the one located at c:\windows\system32

Do you know of any specific reason why wmp.dll would be in the windows media
player directory? (Corporate policy, some application put it there, etc)

Here is another issue...

Media Player 10 could not play DVDs on my screen asking for missing screen
drivers. I installed the "PowerDVD" program that came with my DVD apparatus
(which of course worked perfectly), and suddenly Media Player 10 can play
DVDs too...
If PowerDVD (dated 2003) has all the drivers it needs then why not the MP 10
too???

Windows Media Player does not include the mpeg2 decoder required for DVD
playback. You can purchase an mpeg2 decoder from a variety of vendors, or
use software that is bundled with your computer or hardware device.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...spx#DVDDecoder

There is no wmp.dll file in the c:\programs files\windows media player folder.

After installing the KB911565 patch, then reinstalling WMP10 after I got an
error, I have noticed the KB911565 update is listed as installed in the
control panel add/remove programs. However Windows update still lists it as a
critical update needing to be installed.

Everytime I reinstall the patch WMP10 will not work unless I reinstall WMP10.

Is the patch installed or not?

OK, after I reinstall WMP10 the wmp.dll in c:\windows\system32 is v10.0.0.3802

After I apply the KB911565 update, the same file is v10.0.0.3990

After the update is applied, Windows Media Player 10 won't run because it
says version 10.0.0.3802 is expected, not 10.0.0.3990.

Did MicroSoft test this? What is the problem?????????????????????????

Please run "c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP", and you should be fixed.

We are looking into why this was not run in your instance.

Thanks

I've run that and I still get the same error message and WMP doesn't run.
Should I resinstall again? Should I run the WMP 10 installer again? Should
I run the patch again? Thanks

Btw, every WMP update since this has failed-including the most recent one
this June 2006.

I still have to run "c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP" manually after
each update.
