I have Windows media player 10 and have kept my XP SP2 up to date etc.
however, when i try to open WMP10 nothing happens. Nothing in task manager
and nothing on my screen,

I have reinstalled several time but notiably i cant do a clean uninstall
because there is never an option to uninstall in Control Panel > Add Remove
programs. And now, when it installs, it doesnt create icons, and doesnt even
open! I have checked my computer for adware and spyware and its clean. I also
have a virus scanner and that hasnt picked up anything.

I have read something bout malware? But how can i check for that?

Anyone have any ideas about how i can get WMP to work? It doesnt even work
on my browsers (firefox and IE) so i cant do anything like watch vids etc!

I'm having the same problem, simply nothing happens, I've reinstalled and
removed and added WMP back to the list of accessible windows components, but
still nothing happens, the program is there, but nothing happens, no task
listing, no nothing....

I wish someone would reply to these posts with some ideas

It must be some kind of conspiracy. The exact same thing has happened to me.
Does any body out there read these posts and offer help?

Unfortunately, nobody from Microsoft reads the posts!

however, I have experienced the same thing with media player 10. I have
been able to uninstall media player 10 and revert back to using media player
9. This is the only player that works with XP PRO SP2 Post hotfixes. My
media player 10 stops connecting to the internet (streaming media). it got
corrupted at some point but cant seem to find the registry key that holds the
network protocols tab information. For some reason, when I upgrade to media
player 10 and the player stops connecting to the Internet (it just doesn't
play streaming media) and the error message details points to checking that
the right network protocols and web proxy settings are set correctly. It
instructs to check and enable needed protocols by going to
"tools>options>network tab" but the network tab is not displayed when you
click on it.

Long story and I am not sure weather you have the same issue, but go to the
control panel>add/remove programs>then make sure that show updates box is
checked and scroll down until you find Windows Media Player 10 from the list
and remove it. It will also require that you remove the windows media
format. This will put you back to media player 9 unfortunately but it works!
nobody from Microsoft has ever responded to my posting. Anyways....I hope
it helps you with something.

Hi Mr" I",
Hope I'm doing this wright.

I also had problems with WMP Ver 10. I was playing Heart 106.2 fm radio and
it was very, how can I put it.. bitty, stop, start, stop, start. I ran Pest
Patrol from Zone Alarm, and it's now running allot smoother, perhaps you
would like to try it, it worked for me.

Regards

Katy

I followed the advice, and it reverted back to Media Player 9, but I still
could not play streaming video. I added two more steps, and now I am able to
play streaming video from the web again. I had to uninstall Windows Media
Runtime, and Windows Media Conection, from the Add/Remove Programs. I used to
have the same problem every few months with MP 9 as well, and I was able to
uninstall it, and then re-install it to fix it, but it seems as though in one
of the XP updates maybe it was Service Pack 2, they removed the option to
uninstall the media player from Add/Remove Programs. Which has ultimately
caused to me waiste a bunch of time, but it is fixed now for the time being.
Thanks to all for posting. I guess we have to help each other.

There wouldn't be a clean uninstall option, just a rollback anyways. Click
"Show Updates" in the Add/Remove Programs control panel and you'll see it.

You can always manually run wmplayer.exe, too.

Does mplayer2.exe work? What's the file version on c:\program files\windows
media player\wmplayer.exe?
