Before seeing your last post, I reinstalled windows SP3.
I had to Reset the registry and the file permissions with the Subinacl.exe file. Then I was able to install Win XP SP3. But when I opened WMP, I got the same message as you get on running "sfc/ scannow", that some protected files have unrecognized versions. It asks for the SP3 setup disk. I made a copy of the setup file that I had downloaded, but the system still says that the CD is incorrect. Format and reinstall? :=( "zachd [MSFT]" wrote: > > I'd run "sfc /scannow" first myself. =) > > -- > Speaking for myself only. > See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. > This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. > -- > "Godenjoyer" <> wrote in message > news:76348498-4D98-4907-B62A-... > > > > Thank you for your input. > > I understand that since I have Win XP, "You should be able to solve this > > through a reinstall of Windows" is what you refer to. > > > > > > "zachd [MSFT]" wrote: > > > >> > >> You do not need to update DRM here. > >> > >> Your system is corrupt by the mechanism WMP is testing with. You can potentially try to rebuild the system catalog database and reinstall WMP, but otherwise the next step would probably be a (format and) reinstall since you need to rebuild the system catalog store. -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. -- "Godenjoyer" <> wrote in message news:7EB9E7EA-31D6-4662-925C-... > Before seeing your last post, I reinstalled windows SP3. > I had to Reset the registry and the file permissions with the Subinacl.exe > file. Is there a document that covers rebuilding the system catalog databse? I have been hunting for a fix for this issue for weeks. sfc /scannow is a waste of time for this issue as is http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/...en/indivit.asp and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891664. I have seen it posted on almost every forum but I have yet to see it actually fix this issue. This very same issue has hundreds of posts across the internet. The only common software other than windows is Internet Explorer 8 having been installed on the system at least once. Personally, I wish I could get rid of Internet Explorer 8, it was the biggest mistake Microsoft ever made. I did what I wish I had done a couple of weeks ago.
I removed XP SP3 then reinstalled Windows without formatting. Then reinstalled XP SP3 and WMP. In about 2 hours I was finished. Thank you so much for the input anyway. I learned quite a few things and I hope that this can be of help to others that are going through something similar. Alas, I do not have that option. I would need to start the process of
formating my hard drive, requireing about three to six hours from start to finish. Back in the Win98 days restoring the catalog took all of five minutes. Now I guess they are not allowed to do that, not even MSDN or Technet has instructions on how to do it, unless SQL server counts. I am pleased to see that Microsoft support has been working diliganty to resolved this problem (If you believe that there is a bridge I would like to sell you cheap!). I am NOT a happy camper. I really did not want WMP 11 anyway, but I can't reinstall WMP 10 because IE 8 damaged the catalog so badly that even WMP 11 won't install. I spent six hours restoring my system last night, still did not fix the issue. But, I found a fix!!! At least a fix for the issue I was having. The fix was NOT Internet Explorer 8 like I thought! The cause turned out to be one of three updates, now sure which one (don't really want to take the time to find out) but the bad boy was "KB9522069 – Security Update for Windows Media Format 11 SDK." The other two updates I uninstalled were KB923689, KB929399 – Hotfix for Windows Media Format 11. So, if anyone has this issue uninstall 3689. 9399 then 2069 and the issue should be fixed. This is actually a highly complicated problem that many might not grok. I don't know who specifically you were working with in product support, but drop my name (Zach Robinson) to them and tell them I can get them more details than they probably would know. It's like riding a bike - once you actually know how to interpret these messages, it's *relatively* straightforward. Unless you're referring to here(?) as product support - this definitely isn't product support http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#psssupport =) -- Speaking for myself only. It's likely not caused by IE8 - IE8 is simply another vector that touches the XP catalog database. If you track my posts on this issue, it goes back previous to IE8. It's a corruption state. =\ I haven't seen hundreds of posts on this - perhaps 40 since XP came out... ? The solution is as we discussed, though. =\ -- Speaking for myself only.
