My problem with WMP seems to have a bit of a different twist than anything
I've read here.

I attempted to open a wmv attachment which I had saved to my desktop. WMP
opened, but nothing happened. This happened to me once before, probably 6 mo.
ago. It started working again and I don't know how or why.

Other things I did: Tried to play an old wmv file which I had viewed
previously. It wouldn't play either. I ran the Microsoft FixIt tool. Nothing
found. I downloaded a program called GSpot to check codecs. Under audio it
showed Codec: 0x0161 (WMA v2) Info: 0x01:32000Hz 48 kb/s tot (2 chnls) and
below that said "Status Undetermined." For video it showed Codec: WMV2 Name:
WMP8 and status "Codec Status Undetermined."

I did go ahead and install VLC Media Player, which works fine. Can anyone
offer any help with getting WMP running again?

I think the wmv file is corrupted. Try Installing K-lite codec pack and then
see if it works. The reason VLC Player plays your file is it can play even
broken video/audio files.

First always try a reboot to see if that works if not sometimes WMP doesnt
close properly. Start task manager (3 finger salute the select start task
manager) and check running processes, look for wmplayer and stop it from
there. There may be more than one and the list is in alphbetical order. Hope
this helps.
