You can't download, or you can but they won't playback?
You're a hit and run poster so I'll wait and see if you follow up...

avi format? you should download and install k-lite mega codec pack it comes
with the the codecs for almost all media types , including .avi

I'm sorry to say this, but this is really bad advice. Codec packs
generally cause more problems than they solve (*especially* K-Lite), and
it's not considered smart to install one; see
