It's August 2006, and DOS was released in August 1981. 25 years. I wanted to
see how well XP would function if the whole partition it was installed on was
completely devoid of any 8.3 records. Of course, it's on an NTFS partition.
To achieve this I added ntfsdisable8dot3namecreation to 1 in setupreg.hiv and
modified the already present line in hivesys.inf to 1. So if you want to
consider my concern invalid, then fine..
The following error, "'C:\Documents' The specified module could not be
found," will occur multiple times under the described conditions and the
WindowsUpdate.log will still present it as being properly installed without
any errors, when attemping to install these updates:
- Windows Media Connect 2.0
- Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB891122)
Running Filemon while installing the above will reveal it is writing and
reading using an 8.3 name:
6:51:00 PM wmfdist95.exe:1228 WRITE
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\WMVC ORE.DLL
It reads from the softwaredistribution folder just fine:
6:51:00 PM wmfdist95.exe:1228 READ
C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\f79a0abf5 4df8cb1967cbc84b2d1c410\wmfdist95.exe
The following will take multiple attempts to install from WU:
- Windows Media Player 10
Reason: 0x80246002 (hash failed)
Upon installing the MSN Music Store from WMP10, it will install to a folder
called Progra~1 (C:\Progra~1 literally). This is not an issue with WMP 11
beta and its music store.
Thanks for listening. I realize such a setting can break things, such as
Firefox or Thunderbird (yes, Mozilla is stuck in the 80s), but these aren't
exactly DOS programs i'm installing or attempting to use.
