Greetings,

Your problem could be several things, including "Norton" itself which just loves to start up
Windows Messenger on its own in the background for its [near useless] "IM protection"
features.

You've set the subject of this post to Windows Messenger 4.7, so I'm not completely clear
what version of Messenger you really want to use. I'm going to assume that you want to use
Windows Live Messenger 2009, 8.x or MSN Messenger 7, but if that's not the case, please say
so.

That assumed, as already mentioned, it's probably Windows Messenger 4.7 in the background
which is signing you out. You can either try to determine what's causing that to happen
(such as the Norton feature above, which you can turn off within Norton's options) or merely
uninstall Windows Messenger all together. Please note that by doing so, three features will
no longer work in Live Messenger (Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing), but
in most cases these features aren't being used anyway. You also can reinstall Windows
Messenger at any time to get the features back, should you need them.

To uninstall Windows Messenger 4.7, click the Start button, then click Run and type/paste in:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Windows Messenger will then be uninstalled. Note that if it's in use or running, you may
need to reboot for it to be completely uninstalled.

Hi Tony63,

There is a new version of Windows Messenger 5.1.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Is this computer on a Home Network? Or have you logged in online to an
Online Windows Messenger?

While Windows Messenger 4.7.xxx is still being updated for security issues
(because it is the version that came with the Windows XP OS), the
latest/final version of Windows Messenger is the 5.1.xxx stream.

Note that both the 4.7.xxx and 5.1.xxx versions of Windows Messenger are NOT
the same as MSN or Windows Live Messenger.

Jason, wrapping my head around the Messenger and Live Messenger differences.
Have done a decent amount of research and think I'm understanding now.
However, I have one question I've not been able to find an answer for.

I recently set up a new laptop running Vista for a client previously running
XP. He wanted to make sure he could still connect to a few business
connections running Messenger 4.7. Of course, his new laptop is running Live
Messenger 2009. We were able to connect, but when he attempted to "call" the
other computer, the recipient got an error message regarding their sound card
and was advised to upgrade the client.

I want to minimize impact to the people he connects to. Upgrading them to
Live Messenger will obviously require a learning curve. If they upgrade to
Messenger 5.1, will that resolve the issue?

Thanks for your help,
David

For all intents and purposes, Windows Messenger won't work on Vista
(Jonathan Kay can correct me if I am wrong). It's not a supported
configuration.
