Greetings Courtney,
Actually, in HTTP mode (which given what you're company is doing is probably the only option
for Messenger to connect), it is actually connecting to *.hotmail.com addresses as originally
Messenger was considered part of the Hotmail service. This dependency has carried on and
even today, Messenger still connects to messenger.hotmail.com.
On the plus side, at least Yahoo IM will allow you to talk to your Messenger contacts thanks
to the interoptability features. Also, you could use services like Meebo and the like.
