Greetings Nick,
Just as a first thought, it sounds like one of the dependencies may have been broken. If you
haven't already, head over to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove
Windows Live Messenger (it's under the Windows Live Essentials in the list).
Once that's complete, re-install Messenger (
http://download.live.com) and see if that solved
the issue.
