Hi

I am trying to install MS05-009 patch for windows messenger on my
windows XP service pack 1
PC's across the network. The patch name is
WindowsMessenger-KB887472-PreXPSP2-ENU.exe.

I want to install the patch in silent mode without reboot. The problem
is that I can not
find any option to suppress restart. When I install it in quiet mode,
it restarts the
computer after installation.

Is there any way I can suppress the restart....

I checked the patch and found that its a self extractor installer, upon
extracting I found
that there is a file called msmsgs.inf from where it reads installation
parameters, There is
an entry called "Smartreboot=I" inside the inf file. In changed that to
"Smartreboot=N". But
there are a few problems:

1) How do I rebundle the file
2) How do I find out the command that was originally being executed by
the
WindowsMessenger-KB887472-PreXPSP2-ENU.exe. There is a file named
msmsgsin.exe (in the
extracted source) which I think is being run to install but when I
execute it nothing
happens which means I do not know the exact parameters that are being
passed to this file.

Also if there is another way by which I can achieve what I want (quiet
install without
reboot) like passing parameters in the command line etc.
I am also curious about what tool microsoft uses to create these self
extractor installer
patches.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

"James",

By definition, Windows Updates are determined by the content teams to be
either installed without reboot, or to be installed with reboot, mostly due
to stability issues with file replacement or settings in a service that
cannot go down while the operating system is running. Therefore, when a
patch is created, that flag is set for the package and Windows
Update/Automatic Updates is set to restart the Operating System as soon as
practicable. Going around this introduces an instability that stops Windows
Updates from functioning, as the flag is set to restart.

Is there some other compelling reason you want to "install without reboot?"

Sincerely,
