Hi,
Given the possible layoffs happening at Microsoft (and specifically Windows Live), I think
third-party clients will be where people will be going if they don't want to use the real
Messenger client. I very much doubt there will be resources for a "light" client.
Same examples of light-weight third-party clients available today: Miranda-IM, aMSN, Pidgin
[note: I'm sure at least one of these might still be using the old file transfer protocol,
but most shouldn't].
