Thanks TaurArian, but no cigar - the knowledge base article didn't
help. I'm running non-beta 98se and ie 5.50 SP2, I also deleted the
registry key and am still being redirected to V6 Mac page. I haven't
had a problem with either V4 WinUP or the Catalog site for at least
three years so I can't help but feel that MS has somehow broken the
redirection JavaScript at WinUP site. Anyway you can put a bug in
their ear about broken 98 soon?

I'm running both 3810 MSJava and 1.5.0_07 Sun Java with MS active and
also just reinstalled 3810 and 5.6 Windows Scripting Host. It doesn't
matter which Java is set to be active access to either the Catalog
site or standard V4 WinUp site redirects to V6 Mac ThankYou.asp page.

I don't think this is a M$ problem.

I have two win98SE machines - one exhibits this problem, the other does not.

Just rebuilt machine with windows me provided by peoplepc. Had same error
once I updated to ie6. Rolled back IE6 and updates fine, did all updates
before IE6, once IE6 is installed it sits at scanning pc at 0% and doesn't
check for updates. I had deleted key per knowledge base article referenced in
this thread and reinserted it. It created same problem, sat at scanning 0%.

Is the User-Agent which is being transmitted the same on both machines?

http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx

E.g. open that and do a Ctrl-f find for User-Agent: (with the colon.)
Also scroll down from there and check the the browser settings
being detected are as expected.

Hint: if there is such a thing as a software firewall for Win9x it could be
overriding the User-Agent on requests as they are transmitted.

no software firewall on either machine.

Both user agents say win98.

Then you are going to have to find a way of tracing both cases
to figure out what the differences are. Unfortunately none of the tools
(e.g. Fiddler, netcap, Ethereal) that I am familiar with work under Win9x.

If the User-Agents are the same the differences would most likely
be occurring after the first response, so perhaps would be detectable
using a script debugger. I don't know if your OS supports that either
but I suspect it might be a more hopeful tack to try. At the very least
you could try using the diagnostic technique that I call "maximal prompting"
to see when the differences start from that point of view.

Good luck

Robert
