Windows Mobile and ActiveSync support for Automatic Proxy Detectio

Hi, everybody.

We're configuring Windows 2000/XP/Vista clients with a GPO to Automatically
detect proxy settings. Some users with Windows Mobile and ActiveSync devices
have reported problems when attempting to browse the Internet from their PDA.

So first of all, I would like to know if Windows Mobile and ActiveSync
officially support Web Proxy Automatic Discovery WPAD (wpad.dat on DHCP), and
also if they support Automatic Proxy Configuration Script (PROXY.PAC file
hosted on web server).

Thank you very much,

Mario

PS. Sorry about crossposting, but thought this discussion group was more
appropriate than the "Phone Edition", on which I just posted this question.

Hi,
Short answer - no, WPAD and PAC is not supported.

What occurs is that Windows Mobile devices use the network connection of the
PC to connect to the internet. If you want to use a proxy, the proxy has to
be configured on the device. The downside to this apporach is that the
proxy will not work when the devices are outside the company's environment.

Hi, Chris.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Is it possible to deploy proxy for the PDAs via GPOs?
What if users move to different geographies with different proxys within the
same AD forest?

I would think this scenario must have been considered in the design process
for Windows Mobile/ActiveSync. Hope you can provide further info.

I understand the XP or Vista client can process the WPAD.DAT or PROXY.PAC
file and push down a static proxy to the Windows Mobile/ActiveSync device
when connected via USB. Is there some log to check for this?

Thanks once more,

Mario

Hi,
By default Windows Mobile does not support GPOs. If you want to use GPOs
with Windows Mobile, you need to use System Center, Mobile Device Manager.

You could use the Configuration XML to create a CAB file and install that on
the device. However you would have the issue about accessing the internet
outside the office.

As for logs, I do not know of one that will capture what you are looking
for.

Hi, Chris.

Thanks again for your reply. Good to know about System Center Mobile Device
Manager. We'll consider taking a closer look at it.

As for a log or other means of troubleshooting the proxy information Windows
XP/Vista pushes down to the Windows Mobile/ActiveSync device, I hope someone
else could help a bit more...

Thanks,

Mario

actually i'm having the same problem, the proxy configuration is distinct
from the wired to the wireless network.

the wireless connection does not have a proxy but the wired one has and each
time i craddle any device, they get the proxy config rewritten and therefore
they loose their internet access, and any web access.

Has anyone found a solution for this issue?

We tried adding the following value in the registry of the PDA

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet
Settings\EnableAutoDetect
Value=1

but I'm afraid it didn't help...

Hope someone can help us with this...

Thanks,

Mario

We have a similar problem. Our company is testing a new Ironport proxy,
installed as explicit, not transparent.

I can set the pda clients to use the proxy ip as proxy, and fill the login
details in the advanced tab so the pda can access our OWA to sync the
exchange info.

If i start internet explorer, we can surf the web properly, but there are a
bunch of small apps (for example the weather tab in the htc´s touch flo,
google maps app, ...) that do not know how to connect to internet using that
login .

We´ve tried setting active sync on pc to both internet/local net with no
luck...

Does anyone know how to say to all apps installed on the PDA that they must
use the proxy settings ?
