I'm annoyed with the message that pops up in Windows Mobile Device Centre
6.1 whenever I attempt to connect my HTC TyTN II to automatically update its QuickGPS data. The message reads "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." Since when has updating my quick GPS required an email program to be installed? Yes I realise that message is for systems without Outlook installed but really this shouldn't be popping up with the latest Windows Live Email installed on a PC with the latest OS, Windows 7, installed on it. I've manually gone into control panel and confirmed that "Windows Live Mail is your next generation software that puts you in control of your E-Mail experience." Does anyone know if a workaround to stop this message popping up with all of the existing (free) software (installing Outlook does not appeal to me). I've gone in to select nothing to sync but the message still occurs. I think Microsoft should urgently revise WMDC to make it more Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail friendly, it might encourage more people to install Windows Live Mail. Paul (email address altered in an obvious way to help reduce spam) __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4750 (20100107) __________ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com |

Thanks for the tip Anthony, I had high hopes and followed the instructions
to the letter. Alas that registry edit to create a new string doesn't seem to have made a bit of difference. Have you tested this under Win 7 with the latest Windows Live Mail version at all? I've even rebooted and tested again but that annoying message persists. No, I'm running 32 bit and it's the Home Premium version build 7600. I've
double checked the registry entry and there are two almost identical entries in there (amongst other entries) with the only difference being the name for the original is DLLPath and the name for the one I added is DLLPathEx, the rest of the value data and string type is identical between the two - both have C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\smapi.dll . It appears we have identical setups but mine is not behaving the same as yours. Perhaps a screen shot of the relevant section under regedit on your website would help to point out any differences? I also have a subfolder or whatever the registry equivalent is for Hotmail and one for Windows Mail (even though Windows 7 doesn't have Windows Mail). Thanks for your persistence with this Anthony. Again for any Microsoft software developers who stumble across this thread, you really ought to fix this problem - ideally with a new version of WMDC that also doesn't say it's for Vista when you go to install it. I'm going to stay posting at the top here or it becomes confusing if I
change mid stream. Both the original and added entry under Windows Mail are REG_EXPAND_SZ but the (Default) and LocalizedString are just REG_SZ. The Mail Key above did have a section for default but the string value was no value so I followed your additional step 8 to add Windows Live Mail as that value but it's made no difference and it still won't get rid of the "message from hell". Alas it looks like a job for Microsoft to sort out WMDC (and maybe Windows Live Mail as well) to resolve this once and for all. Personally I can't see why they don't just make Windows Live Mail work fully with WMDC and Windows Mobile 6 devices. Outlook doesn't have a Newsreader so there's no way I want to install that to get full message integration. Even if they don't go that far though, I still expect the unrelated email message to go away as what I want to do at the moment (quickGPS updates), has no need for any email client at all. OK,
Do you have a PreFirstRun value in your HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail key? If so, what happens if you rename it? Have you set your default mail client via internet explorer? Finally, is the sync set up to try to sync email on sync options in WMDC? Anthony Wieser Wieser Software Ltd p.s. my WMDC is version 6.1.6965 "Paul Murphy" <> wrote in message news:844BA64C-0FBC-4E7C-AF9C-... > I'm going to stay posting at the top here or it becomes confusing if I > change mid stream. There is no PreFirstRun related entry at all in there, neither in the Mail
key, nor sub-keys. Internet Explorer recognises Windows Live Mail when I click Read Mail and Clicking the page button shows some options relating to Windows Live. I don't see a specific option like in previous versions of Internet Explorer to choose your email or newsgroup program though (maybe because Windows Live Mail is the only one installed and I didn't install any of Outlook in my Microsoft Office installation - the way I want it to be). The sync in WMDC is setup to sync nothing (ie no options ticked) and quickGPS normally syncs with that setting (it also did so under XP with AS 4.5). Unfortunately it wont sync if I choose connect without setting up your device on the initial WMDC screen or I'd only ever use that. Odd.
My machine hasn't got any version of Office on it, and I got that message initially, made the changes and it went away. Have you searched your registry for the message being displayed, if so, what key's it under. Secondly, have you shutdown and restarted windows since you made the change?
