My computer just installed the September 2006 Updates for Windows XP. When
the computer rebooted it gets stuck on a black screen with a blinking curso
in the top left of my screen. I am unable to start-up in safe mode. I ran
disk diagnostics and the hard drives are fine. I am running XP Professional
SP2 and I have installed all the previous XP security updates.

Between the last automic update and this recent update I upgraded my hard
drive an memory. For the hard drive I used Norton to create an image
(ghosted) of the old hard drive on my new hard drive. I also went from 512
to 1024 mb of RAM. The system has worked fine prior to this. My system is a
Dell Dimension 8250.

Mine wouldn't shut down or log off after the Sept. updates. I had to
disable Viruscan on 2 different laptops. Funny: Last September's
updates were buggy , too. I guess don't update in September.

My Desktop PC has rebooted itself after bug checks three times since the
September updates were installed. You mentioned Virusscan...were you meaning
McAffee, because that is installed on that PC.

After I installed the September updates I got a BSOD screen after rebooting.
The error was a stop 0x0000008E. Shut down restarted and after a couple
minutes another BSOD with a different error. Several restarts and several
different BSOD errors.

****Just prior to one of the BSOD I got the following message:
Event Type: Error

I then was able to do a forced shutdown, remove McAfee Antivirus and
reinstall, rebooted and thus far have been ok (fingers crossed)

Perhaps McAfee was affected by the updates?

When the PC would reboot I would get the message that a critical error
occured and the chance to send the info to Microsoft, and would then get a
page telling me it likely was caused by the HP printer driver(officejet 6110)
and that HP was aware of the problem and working on a fix. Called them and
they had no clue what I was talking about, removed and reinstalled the
printer drivers, still crashing.

So I uninstalled all the updates from this week and haven't had a problem
since. I want to keep up with critical updates, but I want to have antivirus
as well if that is the problem here. Hopefully others will have the same
issue and it will be resolved soon so I can get back to properly updating.
Turned off Auto Updates for now.

I too experience the same issue with A Toshiba Satelite Laptop running Vista
Home Premium SP1. After upldating and restarting windows fails to load and
the system just sits there with a black screen. Sound familiar? The only way
I have been able to fix this is to clear the memory; apperently there is
something being written in the caché that interferes with normal bootup
through the mbr.

(Methode 1) To clear the memory of this issue power down, then remove both
AC cord and the battery from your laptop. Then reinsert the AC cord and power
cycle your laptop it will now boot into windows, you can now reinsert your
battery at anytime.

(Methode 2) Power down you laptop on restart depress the Esc key until the
firmware for bios loads your system should load into windows each time with
this procedure as well.

Why hasn't there been a real fix in the update process? Why are only some
systems effected? These are good questions it will take a few more years
before all the bugs are worked out of VISTA and then you'll be forced into
another operating system =) Welcome to the world of Microsoft and have a nice
day =)
