windows NT in a windows 2008 environment

I currently have a windows 2003 domain with windows NT machines running some
legacy equipment on our production floor. I am looking at upgrading our
windows 2003 PDC and backup DC to windows 2008, but I've heard of some
compatability issues with running NT in a windows 2008 environment? Has
anyone implemented a server 2008 domain with nt machines on it? Normally I
would just upgrade the legacy machines, but there is no mechanical upgrade
with out replacing all of the equipment.

Hello Kevin,

No special installation is needed, but you have to lower the security on
the 2008 domain to allow NT4 machines, this belongs to NTLM settings.

If the machine is on another subnet you have to install a WINS server to
get it properly connected to the network.

Also see this articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942564

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823659

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc731654.aspx

In total you should get rid of the NT4 machines ASAP.

Regretably getting rid of the NT machines is not possible with investing an
additional $200k + for new equipment. Might be easier to remove the NT
machines from the domain and have them work under a workgroup.

Hello Kevin,

You can lower the hardware cost when using VM's. If you have them on a workgroup
you still have the problem with accessing them on easy way for your users.

Thanks I appreciate your help, It's not the cost of the computer itself,
that is cheap. These computers run laser cutters and other metal fabrication
machines, the software interface for these machines will not support a newer
OS and the cost of have machinery upgraded wipes out the any gain by
upgrading to a new version of windows for the DC. These NT boxes actually
only interface with the domain for windows updates or if a user needs to
transfer a cad image from their computer to the NT box. If you were to look
at them you would never guess that they were windows based because direct
user interaction with windows for the most part never happens.

Hello Kevin,

Ok, of course accepted, so more or less you need a file share on NT4 accessable
from the domain machines.

Best regards
