I own an XP.

Can I install this on my Laptop or not?

Is the Product Key for another preinstalled machine? If so, you need a
another product key not tied to another system to use XP on the laptop. You
can buy Product Keys, but they cost about as much a whole new copy of XP.
You would probably also need special drivers for the laptop video that work
with XP.

Retail versions of XP can be installed on any Windows capable machine you
like, but only on one. OEM versions will only work on the computer they came
with. Make sure the computer manufacturer has XP drivers for your model
before you install it.

If the copy of XP you have is OEM it is tied to the original hardware on
which it was installed - so no.

If the copy of XP you have is retail and installed on any other computer -
no.

If the copy of XP you have is retail and is not currently installed on any
other computer - yes.

The laptop must support XP with hardware and drivers - look this up at the
laptop mftr.'s tech support site for that specific model machine.

Can you install your copy of XP on your laptop. Yes, but the real
question is if you can get it activated, and have it pass WGA.

With a retail copy or even a System Builders OEM copy, you should have
no trouble at all with PA. MS has slackened considerably when it comes
to PA & XP. With WGA, you might have problems.

Maybe it's time for you to try out a Linux distro or two or three...

Go to http://www.distrowatch.com and download a bunch of LiveCD ISO's
and see which distro works best with your laptop.

If the copy of XP came with your PC then it is an OEM (original equipment
manufacture) copy and is such is tied to the original machine, so in this
instance you cannot use the copy on your laptop.

If, on the other hand, you purchased a copy of XP yourself from a retailer
( a retail version) and this same copy is 'not' installed on another machine
then, Yes you can install that copy onto your laptop.

If you do have a retail copy and it is installed on another machine but you
are planning on destroying original machine you can install the retail copy
of XP onto your laptop. You 'must' however remove all traces of XP from the
original machine. Also, if your laptop is a new machine then XP may not be
compatible, so check with the laptop manufacturer.

Are you asking whether you can install a copy of Windows XP already
installed on your desktop?

No. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one license) for each
computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's been in
effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows 3.1. The only
thing new with XP is that there's now an enforcement mechanism.

If yours is a retail version, not an OEM one, you can buy extra
licenses (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...buy/addlic.asp). But it's
not generally a good deal. The problem is that Microsoft sells
additional licenses at only a small savings over the list price.
You're almost certainly better off just buying a complete second copy
from a discount source.

Also note, for the future, that XP questions should be asked in a
Windows XP newsgroup, not here in a Vista one.

If you don't have any need for IE7, Defenseless or Windows Media 11, no
need to worry about WGA. Just use auto update with the setting "notify
but don't download or install".

That would depend upon the specific type of license you own, and which
you've declined identify, and whether or not the computer in question is
capable of running WinXP, something else you haven't disclosed.
Therefore, no one can give you a definitely accurate answer; you haven't
provided the necessary information.

If you have a retail license that is not currently installed on any
other computer, and if the target laptop can support WinXP, then the
answer would be "Yes."

If you have a generic, unbranded OEM license that has never been
installed on any other computer, and if if the target laptop can support
WinXP, then the answer would be "Yes."

However, if you have branded, manufacturer-specific OEM license for
another computer, or even an unbranded OEM license that has been
installed on another computer at some time in the past, the answer would
be "No, not legitimately." (Regardless of the deliberate lies propagated
by some of the mindlessly anti-Microsoft trolls.)

And, of course, if the laptop's hardware componernts cannot support
WinXP (consult the manufacturer), then the answer is also "No,"
regardless of the license type.
