Run chkdsk from Safe Mode with Command Prompt to see if that resolves
the issue :

To start the computer in safe mode
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

If your User Account has Administrator privileges, log in with that
Account. If not, log in as the Admin.
At the Command Prompt type in

chkdsk /r

Press Enter

If you get this message " The type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would
you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the sytem
restarts ? (Y/N) "
Type y

Press Enter

You'll then receive a message that " This volume will be checked the
next time the system restarts. "

Now press ALT + CTRL + DEL to bring up Task Manager.
On the Menu Bar at the top click Shutdown, then Restart.

When Windows restarts do nothing and chkdsk will run. The system will
restart when chkdsk has completed, allow it to restart to normal Windows
mode, and then revisit Windows Update to see if the update installs.

I have the exact same problem. I just had to reformat my computer and
reinstall WIndows xp (sp2) . the packet installer downloads but then says it
did not install. The message pops up continuously. |Windows has been
validated. Any ideas please.

0xD0000006 - The code : Error_Invalid_Handle - one possibility - bad hard drive

May be a problem with hard drive - important files may be located on bad blocks.

Try running the "chkdsk /r" command at the command prompt

You will need to open the command prompt by typing "cmd" in start->Run

I did exactly what you said; it found no errors and the darn thing still
won't install. Can I continue normal updates without it? If so, how do I get
rid of the constant reminder? The option to deselect the download is greyed
out.
I have scanned my hard disc and there are no error message or bad sectors.
It's a new install and has been defragged. It is NTFS

Try a manual install -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If it has already downloaded it will be in the
softwaredistribution/downloads folder.

Thank you. I went direct to the Windows update site , downloaded and saved it
to my computer rather than installing. It required me to validate Windows
again before it would download so maybe that was the original problem. Anyway
it downloaded just fine from my desktop. Thanks for your help.
