windows patch 3

Is it safe to use windows patch 3 - I heard there were a lot of things that
go wrong with your computer if you allow windows to download window patch 3
into your computer.

Having no background information from you and only being able to guess at
what you mean - here is what I believe you are asking...

"I have Windows XP (Home, Professional, Media Center or Tablet PC Edition)
with Service Pack 2 and all patches that get automatically installed so far.
I have been offered (or have heard of) Service Pack 3 and would like any
insight you might have on whether or not I should install this service
pack..."

Now I could be off on that - but that is only because of your phrasing and
the lack of pertinent information. For all I know you could be talking
about service pack 3 for Windows 2000 or for Office XP or for some other
product all together. You may not be referring to a service pack at all.
Please be more careful and exact in your wording and put in as many details
as you can when asking a question in a forum such as this. Remember - only
you can see your computer and such when you are describing these things -
you either paint a full picture for those you are asking for help from, or
you are likely not to get an answer (at least not until you clarify many
points.)

Suggestions:

1) Download the full SP3 installation file and/or burn the ISO download to
CD.
2) Ensure (as well as plausible) you have no spyware/malware by doing a full
scan with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes.
3) CHKDSK
4) Defragment
5) Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.)
6) Reboot right before you try to install SP3.
7) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically.)
8) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to
install SP3.

Be informed and be prepared is all the advice I can give. I've had no
trouble on the systems that I've updated.
As with any service pack, the computer must be clean and working properly
before you begin. A service pack will not fix pre-existing problems.
