The PC back up I took on DVD for Vista system is available in "vhd file
format". When I try to access my backup for information, windows does not
open the "vhd file format". It asks for a application to open the file.

Can anybody advice me how to open the "vhd file format" for PC backup? Is
there any application I need to have to access it? A step-by-step method is
highly appreciated.

You need use the Advanced Restore Backup wizard in Vista to access your
backed up data. Click Advanced Restore > click Continue on UAC dialog >
click 'Files from a backup made on a different computer and then follow the
steps.

Vista Complete PC backup and restore how-to details are at the following
tutorials. Unfortunately, with Vista Backup & Restore you cannot access
individual files on the backup. You can access the image and restore the
image to your hard disk as files in one block. To have access to individual
files on a backup, you will want to use a program like Acronis True Image
Backup to create backups that you can navigate through and access individual
files.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for the reply. I have a small query.

I brought the Sony VGN-SZ670N/C laptop a month and a half before with Vista
business loaded. As a promotion, I was provided with Spiderman3 movie loaded
on my machine. I had taked a complete Windows PC back-up after I brought the
machine. Due to unknown reason, two weeks back, the Vista refused to start
(crashed) and I had to restore the laptop to the factory setting. However I
lost the movie. Now I wish to restore the movie from the Windows PC back-up
(I took earlier).

The method sujjested, restores the entire PC back-up and not the individual
files. Is there a way to restore the "Spiderman" movie only from the Windows
PC back-up image (in VHD file format).

Appreciate a lot for any feedback.

Regards

The method suggested by uvbogden should restore all your files.

The Complete PC restore will restore everything, including the movie and your
old Vista OS. If you previously did a backup of files, you can restore just
the files (including the movie) and leave your new OS unchanged from what it
is now. Please check to see if you had your system set to do automatic file
backups. If you don't have a file backup, I don't know of any way to just
restore a movie from a Vista Complete PC backup.

I'm unsure if you could set a System Restore point on your new Vista OS, do
the Complete PC Restore, and then do a System Restore to go back to your new
Vista OS. Maybe Andre will know if the new Vista OS System Restore point is
preserved after a Complete PC Restore.
