Hello,

Me: Dell Inspirion E1505 laptop, Windows XP MCE 2005 (all latest SP's,
updates; not IE7/WMP11 yet).
I don't have any network (i.e. single home computer & a Workgroup), and use
telephone modem dialup.

Windows Update lists an item for that has recently appeared (in category
"Software, Optional", i.e. not "High Priority").
Recently meaning a month of so, more or less. The item:

Windows Rights Management Services Client with Service Pack 2 (KB917275)
Release Date: October 31, 2006; Date last published: 11/28/2006; Download
size: 2.3 MB
More information: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917275

The "more info" article above has a link at file top: "View products that
this article applies to", which jumps inside the page bottom to this line...

APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) for Windows Server 2003

This is the only product listed that the "article applies to".

I don't understand why this item has shown up, as I don't have Windows
Server 2003 (that I know of?).

I also see the title says "Client" which I certainly could be, but the "only
applies to" list confused me.

In any event, is it still correct (or OK) for me to install anyway?

I know installing is optional, but I have no reason to say yes or no.
In general, staying current is preferable, as some day may need or start
using.

Thanks heebeegeebees...

I agree. The "Applies to" list seems incorrect, unless we
apply a fairly strained parsing of the article's Introduction. ; )

I think the keywords for you are "client software".

<extracts>
The article also provides links to obtain the RMS client software.

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft
Download Center:

Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services Client with Service Pack 2 - x86
</extracts>

So, I guess it is only the word "also" in that first extract which
would excuse not mentioning any of the client OS in the "Applies to" list.
I.e., the list would then be limited to the OS related to
the first sentence of the Introduction:

<quote>
This article describes the new features that are included in
Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services with Service Pack 2 (RMS with SP2).
</quote>

I suspect the limited "Applies to" list is an oversight
which will be correctly eventually. ; )
