I keep getting Critical Update message and install the
security update 823559 Security Update Windows. There are
at least 4 installations on this computer. Why does this
continue and how do I fix it?

Robert,

Uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Now go here and
follow the steps for your version of Windows :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

*** Delete the contents of WUTemp if present ***

NOTE: For the " Remove ActiveX Controls " heading also remove the Update
Class file found in the WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files folder by right
clicking on it and choosing Remove.

TEMPORARILY disable your antivirus program, adblocking/popup stopper, or
sypware program before accessing Windows Update , during the download ,
and installation of updates/patches.

I have the same problem with KB826939, I followed the instructions Mow but
it didn't work, the update is still there everytime I use WU even though
I've installed it numerous times.

hello, For those who are still having this problem remember this patch
how even tho you have already downloaded it and installed it but when
you do another scan it would tell you that you needed to install it
again well i finally figured out how to fix that problem and here it is,
first you will need to go to this site
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...displaylang=en and
scroll down until you get to the above patch then download it to your
download file then you will need to go to add/remove program file and
uninstall it from there then restart then before you go to download and
click on it first close all running program like the ones at the bottom
by the clock once you have done that then go ahead and click on the file
and let it install once it is done then restart again then you should
not see it again HTH

Ian,

826939( http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826939 ) is a roll up of
all the previous cumulative set of hotfixes, security patches, critical
updates, and updates that are packaged together ... " Update Rollup 1
for Windows XP is a single package that includes many previously
released critical updates for Windows XP. "

Do you have SP1 for XP installed ? If you do and are not using Automatic
Updates, the Windows Catalog, SUS, or the MS Download Center, then you
should be able to utilize the express installation on Windows Update.
This will just install whichever critical update(s) that is(are) not on
your system. If you don't have SP1 then you will be offered the complete
rollup.

As stated in the KB article :
" You may also be able to verify that this update rollup is installed by
confirming that one of the following registry keys exists.

Windows XP SP1:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP\SP2\KB826939

Windows XP:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP\SP1\KB826939

Note When you install this update rollup, any existing entries in the
Add or Remove Programs tool are removed for the critical updates that
are included in this update rollup. Therefore, some tools may report
that some of the included critical updates are not installed. For
example, Marimba Software Change-Management solutions use the registry
entries for the Add or Remove Programs tool that are associated with
each critical update to confirm that the update is installed. Therefore,
Marimba Software Change-Management solutions will incorrectly report
that you are missing the individual critical updates that are included
in this update rollup. "

You MUST temporarily disable your antivirus program (Exceptions :
AVG and eTrust EZ Antivirus ) prior to visiting Windows Update, during
the downloading , or installation of updates .
