I have a red shield appear in the bottom right hand corner saying Automatic
updates switched off, I have tried to turn them back on with no success.
When I go direct to the microsoft update site it will not allow me to update.

Can anyone offer a fix or patch no help

I am using windows XP with sp2 and all updates to dec 2004

Cheers

I'm having the exact same problem as well on 2 computers that received the
latest update. I also cannot bring up the MMC (via My Computer -> Manage)
or invoke the Security Center, Firewall thru the Control Panel.

Both comps are Xp Pro - SP2 and current on updates. This problem just started
with the last update.

I don't think I'll be applying it to others jst yet. :-(

BTW: No solutions found here either ...

Update dk ...

I did not figure out the cause of the problem, but I used the Programs ->
Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore function to restore to a
point before I installed:

1) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175) and ...
2) Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2005 (KB890830)

BTW: You will find a log file for each update in the C:/Windows/ directory.

The Restore was successful and now I can Regedit, My Computer -> Manage,
Windows Update, Security Center, etc.

The C:/Windows/Windows Update log file may also shed some light on your
problems. I did not determine anything conclusively, but I will keep looking.

I suspect the install of one of the afore mentioned updates corrupted a
primary
system dll.

Cheers & GL,

updates to be turned on and It WILL NOT allow a restore point to be set or
turned back to. Anyone know how to help me ?
