After the update has been installed and my PC is restarted I can not open
Internet Exlporer. If I then uninstall the update it works fine. What is the
problem?

Zone Alarm Firewall installed?
A workaround for Zone Alarm has been posted here:

The same thing happened to me yesterday. I had connectivity but could not
browse using either I.E. or Firefox. I was on the phone with Microsoft (in
India of course) for over an hour, at which time he decided he was going to
"hand me over to his superior who would help me." That is a euphemism for,
"I'm putting you on hold until you get enough brains to figure out I can't
help you." During that one hour; however, he did have me do any number of
things to my computer, NONE of which helped.

After we got off the phone, I removed the update and everything started
working again.

I have disable automatic updates and now I would like to know how do we know
when to trust Microsoft about these updates? Obviously, this last one was a
big problem. I don't see it addressed anywhere.

Hi Spacy -

If you are using ZoneAlarm, you can also check several other threads here
about the problem. Here's one -

Best wishes.

That sounds like all the stuff the Microsoft person had me do yesterday.
None of it worked. The only thing that worked was removing the upgrade.
Also, since I've been running Zone Alarm for years, as well as having
automatic updates install mostly troublefree for several years, I'm wondering
why this particular update would suddenly cause problems with Zone Alarm and
why Microsoft can't release an update that doesn't conflict with the world's
most popular firewall.

Of course, on the plus side you got to hear Tamil as a native tongue,
Cheryl.

That's a good question. I don't use auto-update for several reasons and only
update once a week using the Windows Update page. That way I can see (and
make note) what is being offered before I accept them for downloading. Doing
it once a week lessens the amount of bad updates, e.g. if the update is
problematic on "day 1", I'm more likely to get a fixed version/patch on day
5 or 6.

It's hit or miss - picture me whistling the old Kenny Rogers tune, "The
Gambler".

Ya got me there, Cheryl - I mean, I could probably explain the problem, but
not why it wasn't worked out before the release of this update. Or at least
users given the caveat the update is not compatible with very common X,Y, Z
software - before downloading the update.

There are also reports by folks who don't use ZoneAlarm who have had major
issues with this update so I suspect the dust hasn't settled quite yet.

Thank you Roger. I don't know what to do besides just to leave auto. update
off for now. Guess I'll wait and see what Microsoft does, if anything.

You're most welcome. You might also want to check the ZoneAlarm forum, here's
their take on what to do in the meanwhile. (This is not the "work-around
post" link.)

Thanks for the tip.

Funny thing is, after the initial failure, I "shutdown" ZoneAlarm and still
could not get IE, Firefox, or Outlook to connect to the internet. Only
unistalling the updates restored functionality.
