Windows Send/Receive doesn't work correctly

I am using windows Vista Ultimate and Windows mail. It was working properly
at first for a few days then receive mail quit working with an error, but the
error box was empty. I am using McAfee Security Center without email
scanning.

I have found I can send and receive email if I do it independently by
choosing the send only and receive only option pulldown, but NOT if I use the
send/receive button. An error message comes up with the message area devoid
of a message.

It is not a McAfee problem. I even went so far as to take the advise found
in this forum and uninstalled all of McAfee and this did not solve any
problems. All the fixes listed in several of the answers do not work with
Vista Ultimate. Says wrong version (so apparently the fixes are for the home
edition only, or at least not for the Ultimate).

I can, for now do the manual SEND ONLY or RECEIVE ONLY. The background
receive seems to work also. But not the normal SEND/RECEIVE button. Any
ideas?

Thank you.

This may indicate that the email servers you are using aren't set up to
handle
the order in which Windows Mail does a combined send and receive, but
can handle either of them done separately. If so, you can make the combined
send and receive less likely: Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If
there is no check mark in the box before Send messages immediately, click on
this box, then Apply.

McAfee is one of the antivirus programs for which the standard removal
methods often don't remove all of the program, and often leave the part
that causes problems behind. First, you should uninstall it. Then you
should reboot, then run this cleanup program to remove even more:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee& type=TS&ia=1>

I'm not sure is this cleanup program also works well after someone
deletes the files for the McAfee antivirus program without running the
uninstall, which should also clean up the registry entries for the program.

Then you should remove your email account under Windows Mail, then
restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

Also there are some other programs that can cause problems in
Windows Mail, but do it less often. What if any antispyware programs,
firewall programs, and other security programs do you have? If you
have any program with SMS in its name installed, what is its full name?

If you have the Google Toolbar program installed, uninstall it.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. Most versions of the
Norton antivirus program and a recent version of the Trend antivirus
program are bad choices - they also tend to cause problems in
Windows Mail. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with
a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

Again, please understand, Windows Vista Ultimate and McAfee were co-existing
perfectly until Microsoft's last update. It was shorty after that, I noticed
a problem with Windows Mail. I think everyone is a bit too quick to blame
problems on something else. (Just to give you information, I have been a tech
for quite some time many many years and I know who to remove programs.) I
have followed several of this forum's suggestions before posting myself. Just
doesn't seem like a McAfee problem since I never had the mail scanning
running. Since there is a BLANK message for the error and the program can't
handle both SEND and RECEIVE but can do it individually, it would seem to be
a Microsoft Mail/Vista Ultimate problem.

Seems like alot of people are having the same problem. McAfee and Norton are
major software companies which people have confidence. I do not want to go to
another antivirus program. Also, the McAfee people are unaware of a conflict
problem as threaded in this forum.

Surely there is a solution or acknowledgement of microsoft trying to work on
a solution.

Antivirus programs causing problems in Windows Mail often take months
for the problems to appear. I haven't heard of the use of Windows Vista
Ultimate being any different on this from any other versions of Vista.

Microsoft has apparantly stopped issuing updates for Windows Mail.
They are now putting most of their email effort toward a newer
email/newsreader program, Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to problems caused by antivirus programs, and can take over
any accounts that Windows Mail can already handle, in addition to being
able to handle some HTTP accounts which Windows Mail cannot handle.

I assure you that this *is* a McAfee problem. Trust the techs who have
been working this newsgroup for the past 14 months.
