Windows Server 2003 Scheduled Task Hangs on Exit

We have several services running on a new Windows Server 2003 install.
These are running to completion successfully and the process terminates.
But in the service status, it continues to show "Running" and the service
simply hangs in that state. What would cause this to happen?
