Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP1 64 bit - Server Manager never complets "Collecting Data..."

Each time Server Manager is started (e.g. automatically when an
administrator logs on), the "Collecting Data..." phase never ends (the hour
glass does rotate).

The Roles and Features items in the navigation tree also show "Collecting
Data...", but the Diagnostics and Configuration items work normally. The
Storage, Disk Management doesn't get beyond "Connecting to Virtual Disk
Service...".

This server has the Hyper-V Role installed. The Virtual Machines appear to
be operating normally and the Hyper-V Manager (when started from
Administrative Tools) works normally.

Although there are some virtual machines "running" on this server, both Task
Manager and Resource Manager show that the server is essentially idle. Task
Manager shows that 11.8 GB of the 16 GB of RAM are in use.

We have several other Windows 2008 SP1 servers running Hyper-V on the same
hardware configuration that do not exhibit these symptoms.

Any ideas about what could be causing this problem or what to do about it?

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
