Windows Server 2008 Standard - Administrator's Account Not Functioning

Hi,

I have a new installation with the Windows Server 2008 Standard operating
system. During the first 3 months I could login with the Administrator's
account that was created during the installation without any troubles. The
machine always returns: "The User Profile service failed to logon. The
profile cannot be loaded." Now I am not able to use this built-in
Administrator's account. Trying to to do so, the system automatically logs
off. That is whhy the safety admin accounts - it was clever to create them
right after the first login with the built-in Administrator's account - must
be used to login onto the machine, only.

When trying to login with the built-in Administrator's account, series of
events are being logged like this:

1. Event ID 1500, User Profile Service
Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that
you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning
correctly.
DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified.

2. Event ID 6004, Winlogon
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> failed a critical
notification event.

3. Event ID 6001, Winlogon
The winlogon notification subscriber <Sens> failed a notification event.

4. Event ID 6001, Winlogon
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> failed a notification event.

I hardly can understand the first message "DETAIL - The system cannot find
the file specified". What kind of file is it looking for? My server has a
role of Active Directory Domain Services, DHCP Server, DNS Server, File
Services, Network Policy and Access Services/Routing and Remote Access - no
errors found about them in the Event Viewer, at all.

Could somebody among you help with this issue without a need to reinstall
the operating system from the scratch?

What kind of installation was done when you start the server, from install
disk or unattended?

Any error during installation?

Was there an error during the first 3 month, your statement is not clear
in that point?

Is there a folder in the C:\users for the administrator account?

The installation was done from the supplied DVD-ROM. My box is HP ML150 G5
ProLiant Server. The OS was supplied with it and it comes from HP, either.
As I remember, there were no errors during installation.

As for other faults, I had some troubles with the network card drivers, the
server got frozen, and I could see Blue Screen of Death 2 or 3 times on the
beginning of operation. The network traffic slowed down rapidly before the
BSoD occurred. I replaced the default Microsoft drivers for thouse from the
network card vendors. It seems to be better, the troubles vanished, but I am
still aware if the problem was completely solved. By the way, due to
troubles with the network drivers, I decided to downgrade to Windows Server
2003 (the installation DVDs supplied by Microsoft are with me already). I
have not performed the downgrade, yet.

In the User folder, there was a folder "Administrator". However, I thought
the profile of Administrator's account is corrupted when I was unable to
logon with that account.. I tried to recover it, but the result was the
folder was lost completely. Yes, I do not have the folder Administrator in
the "User" folder right now. Creating that folder manualy does not help. Is
this the main reason for my troubles? Could I repair the corrupted
Administrator's account somohow? I would appreciate any help.

Hello Jozef,

When you re-created the folder did you configure the appropriate NTFS permissions:
- SYSTEM Full control
- Administrator Full control
- Administrators Full control

and set the owner under advanced permissions to "AdministratorS"

Do you have an additional 2008 server where the administrator profile is
stored? Then just copy that one.

If you have a HP server use the SmartStart disk with the latest drivers.

Hello Meinolf,

I am so happy you are providing help I need. I do appreciate it very much.
The NTFS permissions and the ownership are both OK. No change with logon.
Still unsolved. Any other ideas from your side?

Thanks for the drivers links. I will try them, although you have to know
that the drivers I am using right now had been downloaded from the HP
website. The BSoD appeared, either. Then I started using the original
hardware vendor drivers from Broadcom and Intel instead - downloaded from
their websites (I have 2 network cards - the server is a router besides
other roles). Unfortunately, the drivers will probably not avoid my problem
with the built-in Adminstrator's account. Generally, I have had unpleasant
experience with the Windows Server 2008. Before I used Windows 2000 Server
and Windows Server 2003. I have had very good experience with the Microsoft
Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. I am still thinking of the downgrade (as
you can see in my previous post). If I had known there would be troubles
with the Windows Server 2008 (network drivers, logon, BSoDs), I would have
never ordered it. The only reason why I have not done the downgrade yet is
the need of reinstallation of the whole server from the scratch. By the way,
don't you know some other way how to downgrade? But it seems, one day I will
have to do it, as I am definitely no lover of Windows Server 2008 operating
system.

Hello Jozef,

The hardware problems should not have anything to do with the deleting of
the administrator profile.

If you have that amount of blue screens you should get in contact with HP
support. Also i have never had problems with HP drivers or SmartStart.

You can not downgrade the OS without reinstallation. And 2008 is a stable
and reliable OS as 2003 R2. I can not see any reason to not going on using
it.

To get a starting point, i would add either a 2003 or 2008 DC, configured
with DNS/GC maybe DHCP to have redundancy, then move the 5 FSMO roles to
it, copy all needed data or backup and demote the 2008 DC.

Now make sure that the hardware is installed correct and check with HP support
or your reseller. Then reinstall the complete server beginning with SmartStart
and then the 2008 installation.

I do not know if this will work. But have you tried login in as a safety admin
then deleting the Administrators profile using System Properties/Advanced. Then
logging on as administrator. This may cause the profile to be recreated by the
system just as if would for a new user. Its worth a try before you trash the
system.

I have tried this as the very first step. Now I have had no Administrator's
profile among the stored profiles. I can only see profiles for safety admin
accounts. Sorry to say, it is very strange the system is not allowing me to
logon as administrator. How this can happen? Why Microsoft guys implement
something like that in a system that is crucial for domain networks. I do
repeat, it was very clever I created few admin accounts right after the fist
logon with the highest admin built-in account. Without my safety admin
accounts it would be very bad to run that server, you surely understand.

Well, I can still manage that machine, but my feeling is quite unpleasant
about what will happen if the safety admin aaccounts suddenly stop working,
either. If you have some more ideas, I am keen to read them here in this
newsgroup.
