Windows Service Pack Setup has encountered an error...

This seems to be a pretty unique problem.

I'm currently running XP SP1. I'm trying to upgrade to SP2 and when I go to
Windows Update, it shows the only High Prioroty update as Security Update for
Windows XP (KB840987). When I try to install this, I'm getting an error
saying "Windows Service Pack Setup has encountered an error and needs to
close."

I tried this several times and this happens each time.

I then tried to manually download SP2 and install it locally. When I run
the installation, it gets about 1/2 way through and then just stops. No
error message. Nothing. I let it sit for about a half hour thinking
something was happening, but nothing. When I go to task manager, I can see
that WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU is still running under the services tab. So
I stopped it as a service and then restarted. When the machine rebooted, it
said that SP2 was not fully installed and the machine is reverting back. I
then had to go to Add/Remove Programs and remove SP2.

I've tried this twice now and the same thing happened again.

Any ideas what's happening?

Thanks in advance.
Gary

Your problem isn't unique as I encountered the same thing countless times
before giving up - not before i splashed out on extra memory though! I was
warned not to try this download again as it can cause problems and you may
have had a lucky escape if your software is still intact. Just install from a
disk .. . safe and reliable!

Good luck

Hi Friends; My problems are a little different. I keep getting this (PopUp)
window saying that Windows service pack setup has incounter a problem, and
will close.

The error message is=
c:\docum~1\user\local~1\temp\wer5e2f.dir00\update. exe.mdmp

I have tried to correct this problem using serveral cleaners; But, no luck.
This all started when I attemped to download another Windows Update?

If anybody out there know how to correct this problem, well, let me know@
