Are you saying you get the same error when trying to install Internet Explorer 7 as you do when you try to install Windows XP SP3? Or do you think Internet Explorer is part of Windows XP Service Pack 3? Or are you utilizing Internet Explorer 7 and just wanted to throw that in the problem explanation? - What specific Windows XP OS are you running (Home? Professional? Media Center? etc?) and what service pack level is it currently? - Can you get other updates successfully? -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

I am using IE6. I get the same error whether trying to update to SP3 via
Windows Update or CD or trying to update to IE7. I am using XP Home Premium SP2. I can no longer get windows updates because it says I have to update to SP3 first. I tried your other suggestions (disconnect from internet, disable antivirus, etc) but the same error occured. No matter what I try, the exact same error occurs as the exact same time (near the end of the Backup routine of the update). When it fails, please post the last 50 or so lines of your WindowsUpdate.log file... To open the Windows Update Log file... Start button --> RUN --> type in: notepad %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log --> Click OK Copy the last 50 or so lines and post them here... BTW - there is no such thing as Windows XP Home Premium. "Windows XP Home Edition" is the only "Home" edition there is. Windows Vista has a "Home Premium". Please verify your OS - just because. Start button --> RUN --> type in: winver --> Click OK. The top picture tells you the specific OS, the line starting with "Version" actually has the complete version - post that information here as well. As far as I know - there are not any (or at least not many if there are any) updates that *require* you to have Windows XP Service Pack 3 at this time. So, if you are indeed getting a message stating this to you - please post that message and where you get it word-for-word here as well. Here is the windows update log after attempting to update to IE7. It seems
that the problem preventing the update to SP3 is also the problem preventing the update to IE7. 008-12-21 21:33:05:109 1180 5d8 AU No pending client directive 2008-12-21 21:33:05:328 3468 514 COMAPI ------------- 2008-12-21 21:33:05:328 3468 514 COMAPI -- START -- COMAPI: Install [ClientId = Windows Internet Explorer 7 Setup Utility] 2008-12-21 21:33:05:328 3468 514 COMAPI --------- 2008-12-21 21:33:05:328 3468 514 COMAPI - Allow source prompts: Yes; Assuming the update servers aren't too busy ("Update is not allowed to
download due to regulation") and the computer is running & connected to the internet at 3:00 AM on Monday, 22 Dec-08, the following updates will be installed: (1) Office 2003 SP3; (2) OL Junk Email Filter; and KB907417. The log makes no mention of WinXP SP3 or IE7. After spending about 6 hours on this yesterday, with at least 10 attempts to
update to SP3, it appears that the below updates were made. However, SP3 still fails with the same error each time at the same place. Can you make any other suggestions?
