Any time I download a large file (> 50MB for example), using any browser (IE,
Firefox, etc.), over time the program downloading the file will use more and
more memory, making the system run increasingly slower. Also the download
speed will decrease over time.

this is very strange..

try using a download manager like www.freedownloadmanager.org

if you use firefox there is an add-on (extension for firefox) that is called
flashgot that works with this download manager

http://flashgot.net/

tell me if this resolved your problem

Are you using a wireless connection by any chance? I don't know of any
great solutions but just curious because mine would do that and I wonder
if it is a memory leak in a driver or something similar.

i would take the route of deactivating the real time monitor in the
antivirus, just for a test

I'm watching a file copy operation with a "source" of my "shared drive" (S:
is mapped to my LinkSys NSLU2 controlled disk drive at address 192.168.2.77
on my 802.11g wireless network) to whatever drive the DVD uses to temporarily
store files prior to burning a DVD.

The speed started at 3.2KB/sec and has slowed down to 520/sec. The total
amount to copy was about 500KB.

I have to believe this is a bug in Windows Vista Ultimate. Hopefully the
"official" release of Service Pack 1 will fix this issue. If no, it's back
to XP or maybe on to Ubuntu for me.
