Windows Software Protection

Every time Windows Update installs something, the next time the PC is
rebooted, I get:

(X) Windows Software Protection
An unauthorized change was made to Windows
Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited Windows
funcionality. Use the link below to find out how to fix Windows.

--> Learn More Online (doesn't go anywhere)
--> Close (shuts down the PC)

I can restore the system via "system restore" but I get this darn thing
every time Windows Update runs, or even if I try to uninstall a program that
wants to do a reboot. I found a port that said to uninstall the update, but
all I see are Office and Adobe updates in the Program applet in control
panel. Please help me MVPs!

TIA,
Lee

It sounds like your Activation settings are broken. You can 'start' a
version of Windows Setup that only runs the activation if needed, but will
not run the rest of setup. Click Start, and type:
C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Use the "Ratings" feature. It helps the new users.

Thanks, I did that and I will hope for the best. Now what do I do with the
Program Entries in the "Programs and Features" applet that have been
uninstalled? The files for those programs are obviously gone now and I am
stuck with them in the applet's listing of programs on the PC.

Thanks,
Lee

Spoke too soon. Just re-started the PC and still have the problem. Any other
directions you can point me?

Thanks.

If something is changing windows system files without a proper certificate,
I would suspect some form of Malware infection. Running the command MRT from
the start/.../run line might find something.

MRT found nothing.
