I've been getting the "unable to connect to server" message after updating.
I have tried several methods to resolve, including ensuring the modem was
properly configured, settings were correct (i.e. modem speed for 56K) and
validity of access number. Any suggestions.

Check the firewall. By default XP SP2 sets up your firewall for you, Thank
you Microsoft.

Remove the kNOT to reply.
But it is best to share it with the group.

I've tried to disable the firewall, but when I tried this it just goes back
to being enabled.

You could try
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;875357
It has instructions for trouble shooting the Firewall.
Are you on a AD Domain? There may be a Group Policy that enables the
firewall and thus it gets reset when you try to change it.
