I am assuming you either bought this laptop used or "inherited" it from
someone, and that the previous owner either neglected to keep it fully
patched or reinstalled Windows before the machine came into your possession.
That being said, give this a whirl first (ignore the title):

If no joy:
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.
3. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
If still no joy:
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
2. Delete %system%\Windows\SoftwareDistribution <=this folder
[NB: This has the consequence of deleting the contents of "Update History"
at Windows Update website]
3. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
And if STILL no joy:
1. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis (
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**
2. Do not attempt to install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a
clean bill of health.
