You cannot download updates when you access the Windows Update Web site from a
Windows XP-based computer that is behind a firewall or a proxy server

“I ran proxycfg anm it showed I was still setup for a proxy - even though in IE it
showed I wasn't using one.
Running "proxycfg -d" fixed it all up.”

Horsepucky. I have a software and a hardware firewall and have never had a
problem with three computers. I guess anyone can be an MVP nowadays ...

Hi,

?

Firstly, it is Microsoft that have written the KB article, and not
TaurArian.

Secondly, there is a lot of proxy and firewall products out there that
needs to be configured as described in the KB article to make Windows
Update start working. E.g. the corporate proxy I am behind kills
Windows Update, and allowed anonymous access to the Windows Update
Web site as the KB article describes would have fixed this.

But it is the title of the KB article that is misleading, it should
have been better if it had stated something like this:

"How to configure a firewall or a proxy server that blocks access to
Windows Update"

Not what TaurArian said. Read it again.

Eh, I think we have a misunderstanding here, TaurArian just posted the
title of the KB article, it was not her own wording (and as I wrote in
my first post, Microsoft should reword that title).
