Windows Udpdate constantly fails....

Windows update no longer seems to work on my PC - running XP SP1.

Anything I try to install from WUS just comes up as "Failed"

As a result I have not been able to update to SP2.

I've now got hold of MS WinXP SP2 on CD - and that runs for a while but
eventually comes up with an "Access denied" error.

Can anyone suggest what I should try next?

TIA,

Rob.

Hi

Please see the "Access denied" section here:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

I suggest you start out with the SubInAcl.exe tip there and see if
that solves your problem when installing SP2 from the CD.

Thank-you Togeir - your suggestion was most helpful.

I've just finished fixing my registry and I'm running the Full SP-2 install
now.

ps. Sorry - I didn't find your answer on an earlier thread until after I'd
posted.

Dr. Bakken,
Before I resort to the registry as described above, and having checked out
the links suggested for info, what do you think is the reason for [Error
number: 0x8007043C] when in Safe Mode logged as Adminitrator launching
Windows Update? That is what directed me to this newsgroup originally.

0x8007043C

Means: ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE.
Translation: You need a service which is not available in safe mode.
