Windows in underscan or a boarder

I've built a HTPC and it works brilliantly. my only problem is that my HDTV
only accepts fixed resolutions i.e. will not allow underscan or non-std
resolutions. I have no problem when using meadia centre because it allows me
to ineffect underscan the window. As I understand it TV signals already have
a boarder around the picture to compensate for this. So is it possible for
Windows vista os to have the equivalent of this boarder therefore
illiminating the need for under scanning softwear (which I cannot use). I
have asked the TV manufacturer (Toshiba) if they produce or they are likely
to produce drivers for the TV and the answer was no.

Connect using hdmi/dvi if you can.

Hi Denis

I am connected via dvi to hdmi. My Toshiba Regza has fixed resolution, ntsc,
pal, 720 and 1080, It is the same if I connect via sxvga monitor lead. I have
tried various underscan software but as soon as you deviate from the fixed
resolutions the TV has a wobbly. I have tried to alter through Nivdia but
again it will not accept anything other than the std formats. That is why why
I asked if Windows Vista OS can be used with a boarder, I suppose within a
window on a back screen.

While I have been typing the above i've had an apithany LOL What if I use
Xp: write a macro to launch a programe such as virtual PC at boot and then to
launch Vista in a window therefore eliminating the need to underscan. I
wonder if one of the microsoft techies can help

Why do you want to run at different resolutions to the native one for your
screen?
You will get an inferior picture if you don't use the native resolution.

Use Powerstrip to set the PC's output to your HDTV's native res (1920 x
1080 or 1280 x 720).
