Windows update for Windows kills internet connection. I have
no idea why yet.

Windows XP ? KB915748 ? Was the system rebooted after it installed ?

The update here consisted of 4 items. Three of them had to do with Office
but KB951748 is a Security update.
Once installed I lost my Internet connection after a reboot.
I removed KB951748 update and the Internet connection is back to normal.

Is Zone Alarm installed ? If yes, then suggest you totally disable it,
enable the native XP firewall, and then reboot to ensure that ZA is
*totally* disabled. That means all services of it, too.
Then install KB951748 and restart the system.
Disable the XP firewall; reenable ZA. Reboot.

Did that get it installed properly ?
If not, with the update installed and ZA enabled, try rebuilding the
winsock stack from a Command Prompt
Start > Run > type in cmd and click OK

At the Command Prompt type in the following, press *enter* after each
command

netsh winsock reset
exit

Restart the system
Did that restore connectivity ?
If not, uninstall the update.

Machine awas rebooted 3 times.

Removing KB915748 fixed the problem.
