I've been having tremendous trouble with my XP SP2, SBS 2003 domain computers
getting counterfeit software notices and failing to update. I know ALL of my
Microsoft software is genuine and I own a bunch of it.
Typical update errors are 0x80073F8F and 0x80096005.
Tried everything I could find on the web and newsgroups, including system /
BIOS time, regsvr32, dumping temp internet files........I tried using
Add/Remove Windows Components Update Root Certificates without any luck.
Also, tried assisted support from Microsoft, which was basically using MGA
diagnostic tool and the above mentioned.
Turned out to be a certificate problem. I don't know which certificates,
exactly, but moving a bunch of the Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 Primary CA, GTE,
Equifax and Verisign Third Party certificates to the Trusted Root corrected
both Windows Genuine Advantage and Windows Update problems. --
Just wanted to share this as an option to others fighting the problem.
Best of luck,
Richard
just another satisfied Microsoft customer.
