Hi.

Trying to (re) install Windows Update 3.1. From the Windows Update site I
get a 0x80070422 error. So I downloaded the install file
(WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) and ran it. It begins unpacking the
files and when it gets to \update\langspecific\ptb\update.exe, it stops and
says "the system cannot find the specified file".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW.... why is it trying to unpack ptb (portuguese-brazilian) files if I did
not request it? I´d much rather work with English...

The necessary service "Automatic Updates" (WUAUSERV) is not started or is unavailable.
Error 0x80070422
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...=en&IsMu=False

What causes Error 0x80070422
http://www.updatexp.com/0x80070422.html

Did you download the English version of the Windows installer?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

I hope you are running at least the Windows Firewall?
No anti virus - risky ?

Hi TaurArian,

Thanks for your reply.

1. WUAUSERV is started and running - both BITS and the "automatic updates"
service. I read through the similar forums and ran into that. If it is
otherwise "unavailable", how would I know?

2. Yep, got the English version.

3. I´m recovering from a bad virus crash. Had to reinstall XP from the CD
that came with the notebook. Before that, I ran updates normally. As a result
of the crash (and maybe of not being able to update Windows), installation of
Avast and AVG fail before they complete. I am trying to solve that problem
with Avast tech. Firewall is off temporarily, as I don´t want it to get in
the way of any of this.

thanks again,
EBaldino

check point: -

Check the properties on the Automatic Updates service to make sure it hasn't
been disabled in your Hardware profile:-
Go the services and select the Automatic Update service and right click to
bring up the properties. Click on the Log On tab.
Look at the Hardware Profile field and check if the Service status is
disabled for your Hardware Profile).
If it is then you'll need to enable it.
Now, click on the General tab and click on Start under Service Status.

Just another suggestion.

Hi TaurArian.

Thanks again! It was enabled I´d checked it before.

I did manage to solve the problem, though.

As it turns out, the original virus I got that started this whole roller
coaster ride was still in the system. I had to manually remove it, since it
blocked the installation of all anti-virus software I tried.

After I removed the virus (actually, a pair) Windows Update installed OK, I
manually activated the automatic update service and everything is working
fine.

I´m including the explanation on how I removed the viruses here, it may help
other people...

The viruses I got were Bloodhound.Beagle and Trojan.Tooso.R

Apparently these two go as a pair. One loads the other - so you have to make
sure you remove them both. To remove them, you need to make sure to:

1. Disable the Windows System Restore option (my computer - properties -
system restore - disable.

2. Boot into safe mode (reboot - F8 - safe mode). I think any safe mode will
do, but the *only* one I could boot into without getting a BSOD was the one
that mentions "directory restauration" or some such thing.

3. Go into the registry (regedit) and search (F3) for m_hook.sys and delete
all entries making reference to it - even the ones with "LEGACY" on them, if
you can manage to delete them (mine wouldn´t go away). You will usually find
m_hook.sys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services, but make
sure to look into other versions of ControlSet (I had ControlSet001 thru 004).

4. Similarly delete all instances of hldrrr.exe from the registry.

5. Do a file search for m_hook.sys and hldrrr.exe in the hard drive and
delete them. In my case, I could only find them when I was in safe mode, and
it wasn´t because the directory was hidden, either... Make sure to empty
your trash can aftwards.

6. Reboot normally. Go look in the register to see if m_hook.sys and
hldrr.exe didn´t magically reappear. These are persistent little bastards. It
took me two or three rounds of following the above procedure before I got rid
of them. And no other file in the system was infected: I ran Symantec´s
online scan to make sure.

7. If everything went OK, you should now be able to install and run Avast
again. Make sure to enable the Windows Restore option you disabled in step 1.

Good luck!
