Windows update Agent 7.2.6001.788 fails with error 0x800736b2

My system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Checking my windows updates history recently I discovered that it had not be
installing updates since early November and that each time it was failing to
install Windows update Agent 7.2.6001.788

I tried installing the update agent separately by going to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928/ and downloading
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Running that program results in a "copying files" progress bar that gets
about 40% of the way through, pauses for a long time and throws up dialog box
saying the install failed with an error 0x800736b2.

I have included the tail end of the windows update log at the end of this
post which lists the same error number..

So I did a bit of online searching and found the following:

This talks about a re-installation or "reparation" which is the one thing I
haven't tried yet. Re-installation would be a nightmare and I'd spend all my
Christmas holidays re-installing applications. I'm not sure about the
reparation procedure that is described; that may be the last resort.

This doesn't refer to the same error number but as it was about update
problems I followed all the steps in there and still couldn't get updates to
continue.

This doesn't seem to be relevent as it's about when the updates can't be
retrieved. I can retrieve them just not install them.

I submitted an error report to Microsoft and got a "I don't know, ask
someone else" reply that simply asked me to check the knowledge base and the
forum.

Searching the knowledge base gives no results on that error numbe

Searching the newsgroups for that error gives only one result

which leads me back to the pages I have already found. What can I do? That
error number must actually mean something.

Yes I right clicked on WUA 7.2.6001.788 and ran it as admin, I also tried
running it in safe mode.

I cant run the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista as admin as it
has a .msu extension and you don't get the option to run as administrator
with that file. The logs it produces are

There a *quite* a number of errors in the component store that were most
likely caused by KIS.
Canthe system update now ?
Did you install the WUA with all of KIS' services and processes
temporarily disabled ... and the native Vista firewall enabled ?

If you boot to Safe Mode with Networking then all of KIS' services and
processes should *not* be loading.
