I am at my wits end after 13 hours straight of trying to fix this. Computer
started running slow, then started having issues. Found out that it needed
more ram (only had 128 so I moved it to 512) Things were running ok. THEN
emails started to not download, then the system would freeze. Used System
Machanic 5 and everything started working again..then started freezing again
(nothing was being done at the time) So I assumed it was doing it on updates
of the sptware and Sys mach 5...so I shut off all system machanic and virus
protect. Then it got worse. Email wouldnt open, said we were out of memory or
disk full, then when clicking ok, it would give a message about not finding
msoe.dll and couldnt start. So, I turned everything back on, no cvhange,
uninstalled it (sys mach and virus stuff) no change, removed ram and
reinstalled original ram, only change was it was slower than....you know
what. So I reinstalled more Ram, and have been trying to do whatever I can by
going through every windows log and blog and text I can find. NO HELP. So
where I am at now is that Outlook express is gone..It wouldnt open so I
assumed I would delete and reinstall and it would..NOPE...I can get outlook
to work fine but hubby hates that program and prefers express. Reinstalled
express again and it still says msoe is not there...thats one issue. The
other, weather related or not I dont know...is that update keeps popping up
with the same update to install. Goes through, says it is installed and
congrats and all, then about a minute later comes back again..has done this
all day. Sometimes it says the file lengths are zero even...when going onto
microsoft update page it gives the same thing..I am now 13 hours and a
headache later trying to figure out what to do..Help me please? The windows
update files are " cummulative Security Update for internet explorer for
windows xp (KB896727)" and "Security update for windows xp (KB891781)"
Please help???

Sounds like same problem most of us have.
I would suggest not panicing or wasting time until Microsoft suplies a fix
for what they have obviosuly broken quite severly.

Please open a Microsoft phone support call.

Thanks and good luck,
Tom

You might be back working if you uninstall the last few updates you got.

I would also uninstall system mechanic.

Ehm, pardon me, but which Windows version are you on?

KB8967627 has been replaced in October by KB896688 which has been
replaced by KB905915 in December. KB891781 dates from February(!) 2005.

Bye,
Freudi

Windows version?

For the OE problem, start here:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

WIndows XP professional service pack 2.

I want to first thank all of you for reading the LONG note. Second I wanted
to say that I know the updates it is trying to install have been done a long
time ago and others have taken place since then.
I am not sure why it keeps popping up to install them but like I said it
doenst really do anything since they are most of the time 0 in length.
As for antivirus and the other things..ALL gone.. still no luck. Its hubbys
computer so he may have closed it with task manager when it started freezing
up on him about a week ago. He may have also chosen to compact folders
thinking that it would help the recent issues he was having.

At this point I have his computer running at least, no antivirus, no Outlook
express. I did try one of microsofts suggestion and reinstall service pack
2 in order to get Outlook Express back onto the computer, but it didnt work
either. So after 14 hrs I decided to do what Tom suggested and tell hubby to
suffer with Outlook and when Microsoft had a fix, Id work on it again.

PA Bear, I will go look at the link you have provided, and all the other
things you suggested, we already do or not do as the case may be ...except
the 2 things I mentioned he may have done above.

Thanks to all.

Tom,
I uninstalled system Machanic long ago thinking IT was the issue. Then after
finding out it wasnt and going on fixing it so long, I decided to try to
reinstall System Machanic again to see if I could locate the isse...well THAT
program wont even install now. So, it is off. I tried uninstalling updates,
and even did a rollback thinking Maybe just maybe that would work..nope..So I
am left thinking it has to be Microsoft issue BUT we have 7 computers in our
home and ONLY his is doing this...strange eh? BTW all have done the updates
and all have had system machanic on it at one time or another so.... I even
tried to fins a stand alone install of Outlook express...THAT obviously
doesnt exist, but I am now wondering if IE will be corrupt also and am
waiting to hear hubby yell that IE is messingup..Off to sleep before he can
catch me ...LOL

So have a look into the LOG files to be found in the Windows folder:
KB8967627.log and KB891781.log

Post the last ~lines of *both* log files.

Bye,
