windows update or auto matic update will not work

ok where to start?
i came to a family members house and noticed he was only running sp1 so i
tried to update......
went to windows update ... it downloads update but installation fails. i
then tried to view his history and see that all updates have failed on
instalation since he got the pc in 2002.

i have tried windows update and automatic updates and nothing. i am really
stuck. i also get the dreded BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH talking about a bad driver
but everything works fine and all is as well

The blue screen error usually indicates a driver problem.
Make sure you have the latest drivers.
There is usually a Stop Error and you may be able to determine the specific
cause:
