Windows Update - Auto restart after update performed

Does anyone know of a way to eliminate the "Automatic Restart" box that
annoyingly pops up every few minutes after an update is performed? You MUST
select "Restart later" or your computer will restart automatically (!!!!). I
found out this the hard way when I was away from my computer and had a lot
of current work open. I left for a short break and when I returned the
computer had closed all of my programs and restarted!!!

I just do not understand what MORON, and I do mean MORON, at Microsoft
decided that something like this would be a good idea??? I should be able to
have Auto updates turned on but NOT have to deal with a stupid box that pops
up every 5 minutes, over and over and over, "asking" me if I want to
restart my computer. It's unbelievable what some of these so-called
programming idiots come up with, guess I should not be surprised.

Windows Update does not automatically restart your computer.
The user is required to initiate the restart.

If you have XP Pro look in your Group Policy Editor. There is options for
automatically restarting after windows updates.

Start>run>gpedit.msc

Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows
Updates

"(Windows will restarts your computer if no action is taken within 5:00
minutes)
If you are logged on as an administrator, when you receive this message, you
can either click Yes to install the updates or click No to have Automatic
Updates install the updates at the next scheduled day and time. If you do
not take any action in five minutes, Windows automatically installs the
updates."

I was having the same issue as well, always annoyed me because the alert
box would pop up about every 10 minutes. You had to keep clicking "No"
until it was convenient for a reboot. Sure enough, if left unattended
your computer would auto reboot! It's hard for me to fathom why any
programmer would have this as the default, instead of the common sense
mode of "No auto restart". Duhh!!! Do these guys ever wonder WHY someone
would want a reminder box to constantly pop onto their screen?? ONCE
would be enough, but WHY does it not quit bothering you? Sheesh.

I have to agree that programmers do not have much common sense when it
comes to annoyances like this. There must be a reward to see who can
have the most windows pop up for a given program. Norton is one of the
worst. You click to download updates and you go to their download page.
Click again to download what you SELECTED to download. Then a window
pops up and asks you if you want to download the update (uhh, gee, I
think that is why I clicked the button!!). After you click it the
program will download but then a stupid Microsoft window pops up and
asks you if you want to run the software (uh, that's WHY I clicked "Run"
in the beginning!!). After that a Norton window pops up and asks if you
want to install the update!!! (sheesh!!). The update is run and then -
can you guess? - Yep, another window telling you that the update is
complete. Now that would be ok but the programmers were NOT smart enough
to have the box appear a few seconds and then close automatically. Nope,
that wouldn't make sense, let the user click yet one more time to close
the box.

Thanks to WTC for the tip on how to turn this STUPID and USELESS feature
off.

Again, I have to ask, how could some programmer be so DUMB as to incorporate
such a ridiculous "feature"??? Hopefully he has found another occupation,
something like janitorial work that he would be better at since NO brain is
needed...

Carey is right in saying "Windows Update does not automatically restart your
computer. The user is required to initiate the restart".

Automatic Updates does restart your computer after 5 minutes of inactivity.

Huh? Don't those 2 sentences contradict each other?

My computer did not require me to initiate the restart. As you say - the
computer restarts itself after 5 minutes of inactivity. So how is Carey
right when she says the opposite?

Carey is implying when going to the Windows Update WEB SITE, the user must
initiate the Restart but when the updates are downloaded through "Automatic
Updates" then the computer will restart automatically after 5 minutes of
inactivity.

Thank you so much for the post about the Group Policy Editor and how to
change the settings. I hate going out for an evening and coming home to find
that my computer has restarted itself after an automatic update and I have
lost information in programs that are running. I was becoming really
frustrated, but I believe that changing the settings suggested below will
help that problem.
