Okay, if you're 100% sure it's not a virus and you've checked PA Bear's response then -
1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.
2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:
Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok
3. If all else fails:-

|I have tried with no success to fix the "auto matic" updater in Contol Panel
| It is "recommended" you set it to come on at a certain time
| I cannot set anything it is "shaded" in both places (to turn off has a "dot"
| in the center) but I cannot change it there.....what can I do to unshade that
| and turn the updater back on.
| I asked my PC repair guy about it he said at first it was a "virus" that
| changed those settings????? THen recanted and said it's a "windows issue"
| Does anyone know how I can fix this ??
| I am running Windows XP HOME
