I have tried with no success to fix the "auto matic" updater in Contol Panel
It is "recommended" you set it to come on at a certain time
I cannot set anything it is "shaded" in both places (to turn off has a "dot"
in the center) but I cannot change it there.....what can I do to unshade that
and turn the updater back on.
I asked my PC repair guy about it he said at first it was a "virus" that
changed those settings????? THen recanted and said it's a "windows issue"
Does anyone know how I can fix this ??
I am running Windows XP HOME

Judging from similar posts here in the past month or so, the behavior may be
due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection, all of which is protected by a rootkit.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Okay, if you're 100% sure it's not a virus and you've checked PA Bear's response then -

1. Check the Service Manager for "Automatic Update" service
Click Start, select Run and type: Services.msc
Press Enter
Locate the - "Automatic Update"
Make sure the service is not disabled and started.

2. If the service is disabled and cannot be started:

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

3. If all else fails:-
