Windows Update is a blank page

I am using Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer Version 6 SP2. If I go to
Start - All Programs - and click on Windows Update, it takes me to the
following page:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...6/default.aspx

This page remains blank, but there is the little yellow warning triangle in
the bottom left corner of the IE window which states:

Line: 52
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code:0
URL: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...6/default.aspx
This site is listed (as shows as such) as a trusted site.

In reading threads as I investigate this problem, someone mentioned the
following link to find updates, etc.:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

If I go to this link and click on the Windows Update link on this page, I
receive the Welcome to Windows Update and I can scan for updates and see
which Updates I need to add. If I click on View Installation History, it
shows that I have not installed any updates. I have allowed Automatic
Updates to inform me of updates and have installed them in this manner, so
maybe that is why it shows that I have not installed any updates when I
actually have.

What do I need to do to get the Start - All Programs - Windows Update to
actually work? I was thinking originally that there might be a problem that
was not allowing Windows Update to actually scan my computer and check for
updates, but it seems to work at the v4 link.

Also, if I go to
http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us
or
http://office.microsoft.com/officeup...installed.aspx
to check on Microsoft Office Updates, the page comes up showing that it is
checking and both pages show immediately as 30% complete and stay there. I
thought the Windows Update and Office Update problems might be related.

Thank you for the suggestions. I cannot seem to find where to uncheck
Require server verification. I have looked several times at all the tabs in
Internet Options and must be missing it. I reregistered the dlls and that
did not make any difference. What is strange is the fact that I can access
Windows Update through the other link that I listed in my first post.

I will check the setting for Require server verification once I can find it.
I checked the other settings and they were marked properly. I still get a
blank page when I use Start - All Programs - Windows Update.

Right after sending the previous message I checked one more time and DID
find Require server verification and it was unchecked as suggested for my
trusted site entry for *.microsoft.com and so I am still having a problem.

I have not changed anything after trying the suggestions given (which did
not solve the problem), but now when I click on Start - All Programs -
Windows Update the page is loading and things seem to be working okay now.
Maybe something changed at Microsoft's end since nothing changed on my end.

Thanks for taking the time to give suggestions.
