Windows Update Blank Screen - error registering MSXML3.DLL

Hello, running Windows XP SP1, IE6.0 SP1.

I had tried upgrading to SP2 and 2 times it has stopped and rolled
back. I tracked it down to XML stuff.

After testing a million things I went ahead and did an XP repair with a
slipstreamed CD with SP2.

I know have a Windows XP SP2, IE6.x SP2 however if I go to the windows
update I get the blank screen with the following error:

Line: 72
Char: 3
Error: Automation server can't create object
Code: 0

Many searches still led me back to the MSXML3.DLL. I manually
installed the XML downloads from microsoft and if I try to manually
register MSXML3.DLL I get the following error:

DLLRegisterServer in msxml3.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005.

No matter what I do I cannot get this file registered.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT IS STOPPING THIS????

I have full admin rights using the administrator account and so on.
I look forward to your response.

Greg

Yes, I have been down your path and have the same problem, AND also same
issue with wuapi.dll. I have been chasing this for nearly two days now.
Several of my posts precede this one.

It all worked with SP2.
Then virus and worm recovery, I had to Recover system from XP CD.
Al the updates had to be re-installed.
After SP1, all was still good.
After SP2 things got bad when it aborted with Permission problems on
some Registry keys... 28 hours spent dealing with this and I still have
not licked.

I believe the aborted SP 2 install and undo screwed up something and I
am still dying here. Windows update through MSIE does not work for the
above reason you stated.

Perhaps some guru here may be able to provide a way to determine what
is stopping the registration... is it a registry problem? Is it a
problem with some other related files? etc?

I'm almost willing to give an award to the person who finds a solution.

I may try and use a registry monitor and file monitor and see if it
gives any indication of some sort of failure with files or registry.

If I get this done I will post back what I find, but in the mean time
anyone else out there feel free to share.

Thanks

If it makes you guys feel any better, I'm having the exact same problem on
two of my machines. I've scoured the net and tried everything I found to no
avail. If anyone find a fix, please post it here!
