Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1).

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

Try another visit to Windows Update. When the blank page comes up, close
the window. Then go to Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the below
into the Open: line and then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Scroll all the way bottom of the now open WindowsUpdate.log
Copy and paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

I was attacked by a vicious hard to remove (using the usual techniques)
spyware and there were offending registry entries that when deleted would
reappear...the offending file was fatalofi.dll (in system32) in windows xp
sp2 with IE6..any browsing or searching done would result in webpages trying
to open which i certainly did not want to open even in firefox!!!!....windows
update in IE6 would only load a blank page as well.....The file could not be
deleted even in safe mode...search for the file on internet did not
help.....hijack this DID help...The only way to delete the file would be to
use DOS boot disk (in my case with fat32) or by booting to xp setup disk and
using the repair console to delete the file as mentioned "fatalofi.dll". i
disconnected from the internet and did all this and more. ran repeated
scans with hijack this to make sure that the registry entries that contained
this file in the command lines no longer reappeared. apparently once the
file is deleted AND the registry entries are THEN deleted using hijack this
or by hand by searching the registry thoroughly for the file mentioned and
deleting the entries i found there as well, the problem was solved. windows
update then loaded as it should and i was no longer re-directed to unwanted
webpages when i browsed or searched. hope this helps as there are probably
variants. I discovered the file with Hijackthis a very good tool indeed. As
usual spybot and other antispyware software plus an excellent firewall is a
must even though it did not find this problem; and must be updated as well as
antivirus software. I think My problem was due to relying only on the router
firewall. Time will tell if I am reinfected. Hope this really helps.
