Hello,
I recently updated my windows xp using automatic updates. However, now my
computer won't boot. The black screen comes giving me options of safe mode or
normal mode and then the computer just turns blue and restarts to do it all
over again (there is an error message..but the computer restarts too quicly
to read it).
I dont have my CDs with me, how can i fix this problem??
Please advise,
Thank you
Pamela

Hello,

You can perform a system restore to put you back to where you were before
updates. Here is an article that will help you with the system restore:

306084 How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;306084

Once you get the machine back up and it is stable, I would install the
updates one by one. This way if you encounter problems, you will know which
update caused that problem.

Pamela,

IF the system does NOT have an AMD processor than please, ***DO NOT DO
ANY OF THE FOLLOWING***. Please go to the bottom of the post if that is
the case.

Boot the system to Safe Mode with Command Prompt :

At the prompt, type in the following exactly as written and the press Enter

sc config intelppm start= disabled

Press Alt+Ctrl+Del at the same time and the system will restart.
Allow it to restart to normal Windows mode.

It 'sounds' as if SP3 was applied and that this issue arose:

Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3?

*** IF the system does not have an AMD processor ***, then boot the
system to Safe Mode.
When in Safe Mode, open System Restore and use the restore point created
during the installation of the updates to roll the system back.
It will be named " Software Distribution Service 3.0 " and the only way
you can differentiate it from other such named restore points is
by the *Date* when the updates were installed.
